College Lacrosse's Week 2 Award Winners

College Lacrosse's Week 2 Award Winners

We had upsets galore in Week 2 of the College Lacrosse season. With powerhouses like Maryland, Georgetown, Duke, Denver, and Boston U going down, this week's episode of Crease Crankers features plenty of trash talk and debate. Butters gets roasted thanks to BU’s abysmal effort and takes plenty of heat for trying to spin-zone the loss, then the guys dive into the 10 man ride, why it was so successful, and why they hope more teams implement it going forward.

Week 2 features four new winners of our weekly awards. Our Team of the Week will have a chance to validate our choice with a victory over their crosstown rivals this weekend, and Big T makes a push as to why a member of the Syracuse Orange was deserving of 2 honors in one week. This week's Specialist award came down to ball stoppers who stood on their head, and why an assist from one goalie puts him over the top.

Team of the Week: Loyola Greyhounds

Taking down Maryland who had lost only once in the last 2 seasons (National Title game vs Virginia in 2021) is quite the way to start your season. Even though they struggled at the faceoff X, which makes the win even more impressive, their defense was led by goalie Luke Staudt's 19 saves, and close defensemen Cam Wyers, Matt Hughes and Alex Bean, all playing vital roles in limiting the Terps’ offense. They have another big test this weekend with Hopkins coming to town in what will be one of the best games of the weekend.

Player of the Week: Christian Mule’

With a 10 point afternoon vs Fairfield, the Long Island native did it all for Lehigh. Christian racked up 4 Goals and 6 Assists, which was good for a new career high, and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. He’ll be the quarterback of the offense going forward, with everything running through him.

Rookie of the Week: Joey Spallina

Almost taking home our player of the week honors as well, Spallina is quickly making folks forget the 1 for 15 shooting performance in his first collegiate game. After putting home 10 goals in 2 games this past weekend, it's safe to say he can shoot. Once teams start to respect and slide to him earlier & often, expect his assist numbers go up, fully showing off his complete game. We're excited to see him in some ACC play too.

Specialist of the Week: Jamison MacLachlan

MacLachlan kept Stony Brook in the game all afternoon against a tough Rutgers team, and even found his way into the scoresheet by notching an assist. His 23 saves on 34 shots was good for a 67% save percentage. The 23 saves was also the most saves in a game thus far in 2023.

Looking Forward...

We finally get a chance to see the Ivy League kickoff their seasons this weekend, with one game being a possible game of the weekend: Penn vs. Georgetown. Loyola hosting Hopkins will be a fun watch, with Loyola looking to feed off their home crowd's energy. Liam has a bold prediction for one team from the Ivy League, and why he sees them upsetting the new number one ranked team in the country.
